The Gwendolyn Brooks Writers Association of Florida, Inc. evolved out of a three-fold concept: one, to recognize one of America's leading poets and personalities and the immense generosity she bestowed upon recipients across the nation; two, to acknowledge in a lasting way the Gwendolyen Brooks Poetry Prize that was presented to Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright in 1984 at the Fifth Annual Middle Atlantic Writers Association Conference held at Howard University, Washington, D.C.; and three, to engage beginning and accomplished writers and to provide a forum for their literary ideas and creations in Revelry: The Literary Voice of the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers Association of Florida, Inc. The Thomas Burnett Swann Poetry Prize commemorates the legacy of writer and educator Thomas Burnett Swann.
